Paragraph Revision Project 2 Colin Gleason

This paragraph is attempting to defend my point that the liberal arts are important to be taught and how UNE teaches it and how it connects to Ungar’s idea.

A main core objective at UNE is Critical Thinking: Human Responses to Problems and Challenges. This objective has students after two years at UNE, take a class in their major that involves them to challenge and confront controversial topics and current issues in the field. Students and staff engage in debates about their field. This is to teach students how to think critically and to apply the thinking into their major field. This relates to Ungar’s ideas perfectly. Ungar believes that “The first thing that college is for is to teach you to think.” UNE through the critical thinking objective teaches students to think, and Ungar’s main point is to teach you to think. Ungar has a basic point here, but it is so true. Someone who has the ability to think is way more valuable than someone who is majoring in Marine Bio, and only knows about marine biology. Someone with a liberal arts degree is taught to think critically. The core objective is saying what a humans response to a challenge is. Someone with a liberal arts degree has the ability to analyze and figure out how to solve a problem and overcome a challenge. Someone with a Biology degree would be able to do that, but only for problems involving their specific field of study. The difference between a liberal arts degree and a bio degree is that someone with a liberal arts degree has the freedom to go into many different careers.

I believe that having a course like this is important for students to see what they will really be dealing with when they get into the workforce. This class introduces students in their junior year to what their career would be like and what skills they need to be able to contribute to their field. In this course, critical thinking is the most important skill to have because these courses challenge students to help solve real issues in their field of choice. It is good to switch out of the classroom and into a real world situation because it shows students how to be successful after they graduate. This relates to Ungar’s ideas perfectly.
