Active Reading
Learning Outcome 3: Active Reading
The Active Reading learning outcome was one of the most important and definitely the most prevalent outcome throughout the semester. We were assigned a large number of scholarly articles that we had to read and annotate. Most of the articles where on information that was pretty difficult to comprehend at first hand. These articles took focus and attention. I found myself having to read things over three to four times to understand the words that the author was saying. I had to underline and take notes on margins to remind myself of the ideas of what I was reading. At first, I was scared to read these large articles, but now I can take on a scholarly article. I learned how to annotate in multiple different ways that make for a better understanding of the material. Through my significant writing project, which was project 2, I had to read and annotate 2 different articles from Jeffrey Scheuer and Sanford Ungar and their views on higher education. I have attached evidence of my annotations which help to understand the reading and demonstrate active reading. I have attached a homework assignment from October 2nd that shows my understanding of the readings. This homework shows good informal reading responses. In another homework assignment, called “Critical Thinking and The Liberal Arts,” I show my ability to actively read through the information I write about each of the sections in the homework. Through these annotations and this informal homework assignment, I demonstrate my ability to actively read.
