Coordination and Subordination:

A liberal arts education provides a well rounded education that teaches students how to think critically, and teaches them how to write and to communicate orally. (This sentence uses coordination correctly becuase it uses the correct conjunction of “and”, and it connects two parts of a sentence. It connects two independent clauses.)

According to the UNE CAS Handbook, “Through the Core Curriculum, students will develop foundational knowledge and critical thinking skills that are necessary for understanding and assuming their roles in natural, social, humanistic, and other environments. (uses the conjunction and, combines the two separate ideas of the sentence of critical thinking and functional knowledge)

 Someone who has the ability to think is way more valuable than someone who is majoring in Marine Bio, and only knows about marine biology. (uses coordination because it combines two separate ideas into one sentence with conjunction “and”)

Subordination:

 Scheuer believes that a liberal arts education is important for people to live in a democracy.

Scheuer believes that a liberal arts education is important for people to live in a democracy because without a liberal arts education, people would not be adept to living in a democratic society. (New sentence shows subordination because I showed two parts of a sentence and made one idea more important than the other)

The most important skill is to know how to problem solve and to be able to innovate and develop through a career.

(subordination because I connect two ideas, making one more important than the other.)

Jeffrey Scheuer’s has similar ideas in his article. He believes that we need the liberal arts because it teaches students how to think critically. The term liberal arts is “more comprehensive and systematic: a social ecology involving a range of activities symbiotic with democratic communities.” He is saying that liberal arts is a much broader term than just learning, it is a social ecology that governs how people live their everyday life. Scheuer believes that a liberal arts education is important for people to live in a democracy. What Scheuer means by saying that the liberal arts education is crucial for people in a democracy is that it creates a well rounded individual who can contribute to society in a few different ways. He says that there are three different forms of citizenship that the liberal arts are key for. The first one is the traditional civic dimension. Which basically means that someone is a productive member of their society by going out and voting and participating in the public. The second one is economic citizenship, which means that someone is a productive member of their community, by working and paying taxes to help the community. The last one is cultural citizenship, which is being an informed and active member in the community. These three dimensions of citizenship are what make democracy work productively. People with liberal arts degrees receive an education that allows them to be proficient in all three of these dimensions.    These two ideas are both involved with learning how to think and live in society and in career.

The core curriculum at UNE prepares students for a successful career through its teaching of critical liberal arts skills. UNE wants to provide a well rounded education for each and every student, for many different important reasons. I believe that a one dimensional education serves no purpose for students. Students should have to learn a core curriculum of different subjects so that they can develop well rounded knowledge that will prepare for future success. I think that if someone goes to school for Marine Biology, and only learns about marine biology, they will not be prepared for work after school, except in a specific marine biology field. This creates a trap for that person, where they can’t grow and rise up the corporate ladder. Someone with a well rounded liberal arts education, has the ability to use their skills and abilities learned through the core curriculum to get a job and then to rise up the corporate ladder from there. He states several different misconceptions of the liberal arts, and he then he responds to these with his defense. Both of these articles together help to make sense and advance understanding of UNE’s College of Arts and Sciences Core Handbook.
